CARBIOS, a green chemistry company in industrial development stage with a focus on  discovering and developing enzymatic bioprocesses to reinvent the lifecycle of plastics.

By combining enzymology and plasturgy, a novel industrial approach, CARBIOS brings a major change to the way that plastics are produced and consumed.

CARBIOS’ processes are based on the use of enzymes produced by natural micro-organisms, selected for their ability to degrade the polymers that make up plastic materials.Three innovative bioprocesses are under development at the company:

  1. Creation of a new generation of fully biodegradable plastics with a controlled lifespan (biodegradation)
  2. Infinite biorecycling of plastic waste enabling the production of new plastics of the same quality as the original product (biorecycling)
  3. Production of biopolymers through a new biological pathway (bioproduction)

Since July 2012, the Company has implemented and managed a collaborative research and development project bringing together renowned academic and private sector experts, such as Limagrain, the Group Barbier, Deinove, the CNRS, the INRA, TWB and Poitiers University, under the framework of the THANAPLAST™ consortium with the support of Bpifrance.Today, CARBIOS is in the industrial development stage of its first biodegradation technology with the operational launch, on September 2016, of the joint-venture CARBIOLICE, created in partnership with Limagrain and the SPI fund operated by Bpifrance.

With a production capacity of 4,000 tons per year, CARBIOLICE will operate CARBIOS’ patented enzymatic biodegradation technology by producing enzymated pellets to be used in the production of a new generation of biosourced and biodegradable plastics.

Based in Auvergne, France, CARBIOS has been listed on the Paris Euronext Growth market (formerly Alternext) since December 19, 2013.

What is the environmental challenge?

More than 125 million tons of plastic waste are generated each year, of which roughly 9 million tons end up discarded in nature, particularly in the seas and oceans.

Rethinking the lifecycle of plastics is a real challenge of our time in order to pass on to future generations a more sustainable society that is both affluent and preserves the global environment.

An innovative approach to address the environmental concern and the economic and industrial challenges of the sector.

The industrial bioprocesses developed by CARBIOS offer alternative means to valorize plastics at end of life and produce new renewable raw material. To accomplish this, CARBIOS is creating a new generation of biodegradable plastics with a programmed life cycle that are adapted to the end use of the plastic material and do not generate any waste or require any specific composting conditions.  In the domain of recycling, CARBIOS is developing bioprocesses that enable the re-valuation of plastic waste to produce new plastics with identical levels of performance to those from which they originated, thus opening a route to recycling plastic materials to infinity.

Which strategy is being used to deploy our innovative technologies?

CARBIOS’ economic development model is based on the licensing of its products, enzymes, technologies, and bioprocesses to leading industrials.  The Company will license its know-how and its intellectual property directly or via joint ventures to major market players in the sectors that can make use of the Company’s innovative technologies.

The licenses granted will generate revenue in the form of up-front payments, royalties and/or dividends.

In accordance with the implemented strategy, CARBIOS signed its first licensing agreement in 2016 with the company CARBIOLICE. The agreement includes an 8 million euros upfront payment and turnover royalties.
